Flu Vaccination

A cold normally takes a week to fully recover from, while the flu usually lasts longer. It’s crucial to take precautions because flu symptoms and associated complications can be devastating.

The best defence against the flu and its potentially fatal complications for you and your loved ones is a flu shot. The flu vaccine is an important preventative measure that can help reduce the risk of contracting the flu and experiencing its associated symptoms, such as fever, cough, and body aches. Everyone over the age of six months should get the annual flu shot, according to Health Canada.

We annually provide free flu shots, usually beginning in October or November.

Who is most at risk?

Who Is Most At Risk?

Everyone can get the flu, including healthy adults. However, some people are at higher risk of flu related complications:

  • People over the age of 65 and children under five
  • Women who are pregnant or who intend to get pregnant
  • Long-term care facility occupants
  • People who suffer from long-term illnesses like diabetes

Influenza, also known as the “flu,” is a contagious respiratory disease. The majority of people recover from the flu in 7 to 10 days, but serious consequences like pneumonia are more likely to occur in young children, babies, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with chronic health conditions.

Getting vaccinated each year against the flu is your best line of defence. There are several strategies to avoid contracting the flu, such as taking the flu vaccination, regularly washing your hands, avoiding touching your face, disinfecting household items and children’s toys, and leading an active, healthy lifestyle.

If you are sick, you should postpone getting immunized until you feel better. Wait 10 days from the onset of your symptoms or until you feel well, whichever comes later, if you have acute respiratory infection symptoms, even minor ones like a sore throat or runny nose. You shouldn’t go to your flu shot appointment if you have suspected, probable, or proven COVID-19 or if you are a close contact of a case.
